Project summary
Marcon Construction delivered a phased refurbishment and specialist enabling package for the replacement MRI installation at North Middlesex University Hospital. The works created the prepared clinical environment, technical infrastructure and safe delivery route required for a state-of-the-art Siemens MRI system.
Delivery combined phased alterations to operational support areas with the main MRI fit-out, specialist shielding, complex mechanical and electrical services and the carefully managed delivery of the magnet through the live atrium and hospital corridors.
The challenge
The replacement MRI was installed in an operating hospital. Support areas around it had to keep working while they were altered.
The magnet itself had to be brought in through the hospital's live atrium and corridors.
Our approach
Alterations to the operational support areas were phased alongside the main MRI fit-out.
The works took in the specialist shielding and the complex mechanical and electrical services the new system needs.
The magnet's delivery through the live atrium and hospital corridors was carefully managed.
Outcome
The works created the prepared clinical environment, technical infrastructure and safe delivery route the new Siemens MRI system needed. The 14-week construction programme was followed by Siemens commissioning and the Trust's Medical Physics activities.
The new equipment gives the Trust reduced scanning times, increased image quality and access to advanced scanning techniques.
