C&W Hospital – David Erskine Ward
Construction of wards and isolation suites
Project summary
Marcon redeveloped David Erskine Ward at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital into a 28-bed respiratory unit with five negative-pressure isolation suites, on a 24-week programme, to add respiratory care capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The challenge
The ward sat directly below live operating theatres and above a working maternity unit.
A multi-specialty ward had to become a specialist unit for advanced respiratory therapies, including CPAP and high-flow oxygen.
Our approach
Noise and vibration were controlled, working hours were aligned with clinical schedules, and the team liaised with hospital staff throughout to coordinate sensitive activities.
Flexible zoning, with sliding doors and reconfigurable spaces, was built in to support infection control and pandemic preparedness.
Outcome
The unit was completed within the 24-week programme, adding respiratory care capacity when the hospital needed it.
