The Project

Marcon Construction was appointed under an NEC4 Option A contract to refurbish a disused linear accelerator (LINAC) suite in the basement of Guy’s Hospital, creating a new TomoTherapy treatment facility. This £2 million investment supports advanced cancer care, delivering sub-millimetre radiation precision for over 500 patients per year.

Scope of Works

  • Strip-out of all existing M&E services from the former LINAC suite
  • Installation of new mechanical systems including AHUs, ventilation, domestic water, and heating
  • New low-voltage switchgear and electrical services
  • Full construction of a new TomoTherapy suite and ancillary areas
  • Installation of full radiation protection systems in accordance with shielding requirements

Collaborative Delivery

The project was delivered in close coordination with the Trust’s estates team and medical equipment suppliers, including GE Healthcare. The NEC4 Option A form encouraged transparency, risk-sharing, and proactive issue resolution — key to working in the constrained, live hospital environment.

Outcome

The completed suite now accommodates a cutting-edge TomoTherapy system, which combines intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with built-in CT scanning for highly targeted treatment. This facility dramatically improves the hospital’s capacity to deliver complex oncology care with minimal impact on healthy tissues.
