The Project
Project Scope
The project entailed the refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing spaces south of the theatre corridor within Central Middlesex Hospital. Key components included:
- Installation of two additional laminar flow operating theatres
- Development of a ten-bay recovery ward
- Creation of supporting accommodation and ancillary facilities
These enhancements were designed to augment the hospital’s surgical capacity and facilitate the centralised delivery of elective orthopaedic services.
Delivery Approach
The works were delivered in a single phase within a live hospital environment, requiring close coordination and careful planning to minimise disruption. Throughout the construction period, existing theatres A, B, and C remained fully operational.
Key measures to mitigate risk and maintain patient and staff safety included:
- Installation of full-height, hard hoardings to separate construction zones from active clinical areas
- Maintenance of fire escape strategies and integration with existing detection systems
- Close collaboration with hospital teams to align construction activities with clinical operations
This proactive approach safeguarded the hospital’s critical services and ensured the continuity of patient care during the refurbishment.
Outcomes and Impact
The successful completion of the EOC project delivered significant benefits:
- Expanded surgical capacity, enabling an additional 4,000 orthopaedic procedures per year
- Reduction of elective surgery waiting lists, addressing a backlog of over 16,000 patients
- Improved patient experience through modern, dedicated facilities and streamlined care pathways
- Operational efficiencies and cost savings estimated at £4 million annually
Additionally, the project optimised the use of existing hospital infrastructure by transforming underutilised spaces into high-functioning surgical environments.
Conclusion
The development of the North West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Central Middlesex Hospital stands as a testament to strategic planning, effective collaboration, and patient-centered design. By expanding operating capacity and centralising elective orthopaedic services, the project has significantly enhanced healthcare delivery for the North West London community, ensuring faster access to high-quality surgical care.
