The Project
Marcon were appointed to deliver a new Endoscopy Unit at Central Middlesex Hospital, supporting the hospital’s mission to expand and modernise its diagnostic services.
The project involved the extensive internal conversion of an existing space to create a state-of-the-art facility comprising:
- Five fully equipped treatment rooms,
- Associated recovery bays and changing areas,
- Administrative offices,
- A seminar room fitted with live video feed capabilities for teaching purposes.
Scope of Works
The scheme required:
- Extensive internal alterations to reconfigure the layout,
- New mechanical and electrical installations to support specialist endoscopy equipment,
- Construction of a dedicated scope cleaning area,
- High-specification finishes to meet healthcare infection control standards.
In addition, a new external access point was created by converting an existing window into a fully compliant doorway, facilitating controlled site access.
Working in a Live Environment
One of the critical challenges of the project was delivering the construction works within a live hospital environment, where minimising disruption to ongoing patient care was paramount.
To ensure the safety and uninterrupted operation of adjacent clinical services:
- Full-height hoardings were erected to separate construction areas,
- Strict infection control measures were adopted,
- A clear fire escape strategy was maintained throughout,
- Temporary fire detection systems were installed and integrated with the hospital’s network,
- Controlled access routes and logistics plans were implemented to ensure deliveries and waste removal caused minimal disruption.
Key Achievements
- Completed within a 30-week programme,
- Zero disruption to hospital services during construction,
- Successfully delivered a high-specification clinical environment,
- Improved patient flow and experience with a modern, efficient endoscopy suite.
