The Project
Marcon Construction was appointed to transform a disused theatre into a 33-bed Acute Medical Unit (AMU), delivering the works through a fast-track programme during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project involved a full strip-out and reconfiguration, along with modern finishes and comprehensive M&E upgrades – including four new air handling units, ventilation, bedhead trunking, nurse call systems, and medical gases.
A key challenge was carrying out complex structural and service works directly adjacent to a live Emergency Department and beneath a functioning Maternity Unit. Strict noise, vibration, and dust control protocols were implemented, including the use of AirCubes, acoustic hoardings, and carefully timed deliveries.
Despite the complexities, the project was delivered on time, providing the hospital with a high-quality, modern AMU that now plays a critical role in patient care and flow.
